I don’t often comment on politics on-line, at least in part because of the inherently eternal nature of any such comments, and in part because I prefer to engage in discussion rather than just setting out a stall - I’m really not tied to any particular party.
That said, I really want to register in public my thoughts on the Military Covenant that has been discussed in the media over the last few weeks. While I don’t and won’t necessarily agree with everything the military does (and much of which they have little control over), I’m immensely humbled by their personal sacrifice, courage and professionalism in some of the most difficult circumstances on the planet.
I recently heard a talk by Colonel Bob Stewart on his experiences in Bosnia which were truly eye-opening and had a brief conversation with him afterwards. It was a humbling talk, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for what he has done, but I couldn’t find the words to express that. There was talk on Newsnight that we aren’t like Americans who go through are very open about their appreciation of sacrifice. We aren’t but, at least in my case, it’s because I can’t find the words. I’ve spoken to a number of service personnel on public transport in the last few years and always wanted to thank them for what they do but can never bring myself to emote in that way to a total stranger.
We (civilian society) do need to do better at upholding our end of the Military Covenant. We should spend the extra money and give those who put their lives and rights on hold excellent treatment through and after their service.
